Peter + Andie | Lake Michigan Proposal
During a typical proposal I’m a discreet yet close-by onlooker, waiting to capture the moment in photographs. But that all changed when Andie’s sister contacted me, asking me to play along as a cousin of one of their friends. You see, Peter was planning to propose on a boat in Lake Michigan near North Avenue Beach. With Andie’s two sisters, Peter, and their friend Mat driving the boat, it would be pretty obvious if I was there, too. So, I put on my best acting face, hid my camera in a large purse, and hopped on the boat as “the cousin” (luckily everyone was filled in on the backstory except Andie).
Off we went into the gorgeous blue waters of Lake Michigan. It was truly a perfect evening – the sun was out, it wasn’t too hot, and the breeze from the boat made it all the nicer. Of course, I don’t have photos of this part of the boat ride, as I couldn’t have my camera out just yet.
As we neared North Avenue Beach, Mat turned off the engine and we drifted on the beautiful water. In this moment, I grabbed for my bag (and camera), and Peter began to get down on one knee to propose. It was a wonderful moment of surprise, excitement, and a big YES!
Champagne popped, sisters embraced, and a FaceTime call with the family ensued. As Mat steered us into Diversy Harbor, another bottle of champagne was opened (this time be the bride-to-be!) and we continued with a few photos near the docks.
When we finished taking photos, I waived goodbye as they boated off into the distance to continue celebrating and enjoying the gorgeous evening ahead of them. Congratulations Andie + Peter! It was a pleasure getting to photograph such a wonderful moment for you both!
